Dentistry is the health profession that prevents and corrects problems of the teeth, gums, and mouth. The practice of dentistry involves taking x-rays, locating and filling cavities in teeth, straightening crooked teeth, extracting teeth, repairing fractured teeth, treating gum diseases, placing protective plastic sealants on children's teeth, and performing dental surgery. Dental services are needed among all age groups. Like medicine, there are many dental specialties. However, most Dentists are general dentists.
Dental School is a 4-year program which involves dominantly class and laboratory experiences in the first two years, and clinical experiences in the last two. There are two Dental schools in Florida, UF and Nova SE, among 55 schools nationwide.
In addition to the course requirements that are common to most health professions, dental schools may also require or recommend some or all of the courses listed below.
The following courses are based on the requirements and recommendations of the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Consult the dental schools you are interested in for each school's specific requirements.
Please note: Students admitted to a United States medical or dental school after completing ninety (90) semester hours at the University of South Florida may be awarded a B.S. degree in Biomedical Sciences additional requirements are completed. This degree program takes careful planning. Please consult an advisor early in your career if you plan to pursue this option. Consult the catalog for more information about this.
