Baccari, Rochelle D. 1991 - Sick Child Care: Everyone's Business - A Pinellas County Corporate/Community Response.

Abstract: This thesis describes a collaborative study I conducted with the Pinellas County Task Force on Day Care for Mildly Ill Children, in January 1990. The Employer Child Care Connection (ProjectLink), a free service to employers exploring the possibility of sponsoring child care benefits for their employees, established the task force in May of 1988. The task force is comprised of approximately 30 members representing Pinellas County businesses and organizations, all concerned with issues related to sick child care. I developed a survey instrument and conducted a study of 10 large companies (500 employees or more) in Pinellas County, Florida to document the need for sick child care services. Three area hospitals with existing hospital-based sick child care programs for hospital employees - Bay Front Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida, Morton Plant in Clearwater, Florida, and Sun Coast in Largo, Florida - agreed to be listed on the survey as potential providers of sick child care services. Respondents from 9 large companies reported a total of 3,081.5 full days absent and 2.461 partial days absent in the past 6 months (July through January) because their child was sick. This survey provided quantifiable data regarding employees' need and willingness to use sick child care services if they were available. The newly developing literature and major policy implications regarding sick child care are discussed, as well as the contributions applied anthropology has made to the study of sick child care. Recommendations and conclusions in regard to new sick child care services are suggested.
