Chrisp, Eric (MA). The
Power of the Past in Community Development: Coordination of a Community
History Project in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Greenbaum). 2001.
Some scholars, activists, and governments conceive of community development
as affecting primarily physical infrastructure. This concept only tangentially
encourages
social changes and often neglects self determinism. In contrast, this
thesis describes an
effort which employs the power of the past to bond a community together,
improve its
self-concept and resist mass media hegemony. The theories of political
economy and
cultural reproduction are wedded to explain the processes that shaped
the client
community. It is argued that a critical recognition of the past, an analysis
of its
implications and targeted dissemination constitutes community development.
