Feldman, Shari (MA). Revitalization and preservation of the Marti-Maceo Society in Ybor City, Florida (Greenbaum), 2002.

In this thesis, I provide a case study of a historical social organization's attempt to
revitalize and transform in the face of rapid internal decline and the redevelopment of its
surrounding neighborhood. I base this analysis on my participation and observation of
the Marti-Maceo society in Ybor City, Florida, specifically my involvement as a member
of an ad hoc committee that was created to of redefine the mission and purposes of the
club. I consider whether the internal organizational structure has the capacity to endure
the impending external forces, such as local redevelopment and the greater societal
change, that threaten its place in the future. In addition, I discuss some of the internal
organizational dynamics that both aid, and impede the transformation and revitalization
of Marti-Maceo. I conclude that Marti-Maceo has unique advantages and strengths and
the members have the capacity to reinforce existing solidarity necessary to transform
their organization. The key to successful transformation and sustainability is creating
networks with the local community.
