Goodwin, Larry. 1979. - Applied Anthropology in the Public School System.APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGY IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

Major Professor: Patricia Waterman

Folklore and the anthropological viewpoint can be integrated into the elementary school curriculum. This paper discusses an applied anthropology project in which the integration was designed both as a teaching instrument and as an approach to address basic social problems.

The specific problem addressed during the project was the lack of rapport and communication within the following social networks: students within their peer group, students and teachers, and the interface between school and community.

The methodology utilized during the project included curriculum design, a field study of folklore techniques used by the Foxfire Foundation and a field internship in which the investigator taught and monitored classes at Williams Elementary School, Tampa, Florida.

The paper includes a detailed ethnographic analysis of the project, an anthropological curriculum presented in daily lesson plan format and recommendations that describe various benefits obtained from the introduction of anthropology into the elementary school.
