Hutchinson-Neff, Ora Lee, December 1990 - AN ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE ASSESSMENT OF THE TAMPA BAY REGION, FLORIDA Abstract: The intent of this project was to assist the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council in developing an archaeological site assessment of the Tampa Bay Region's previously recorded archaeological sites. This was conducted for the purpose of developing an effective management tool for the conservation of significant cultural resources within the Tampa Bay Region. For the purposes of this project the specific counties included in the Tampa Bay Region were Hillsborough Manatee, Pasco, and Pinellas. One of the project's specific goals was to visit all recorded archaeological sites in the Tampa Bay Region and 1) determine actual site location; 2) assess the extent of site disturbance; and 3) record present land use. Prior to the field investigation a site inventory of the existing sites in the Tampa Bay Region was developed and maps of prehistoric archaeological sites in the Tampa Bay Region were generated. All new and updated information was added to the geographical information system data files. The second goal of the project was to illustrate the rate of archaeological site destruction through information obtained during the field investigations. The final goal of the project was to make recommendations on how the Tampa say Region can preserve or mitigate adverse impacts to any undisturbed or salvageable sites. The focus of the project was centered on the coastal prehistoric archaeological resources of the Tampa Bay Region. While historic period archaeological sites were investigated and evaluated, historic period structures were not visited unless they were believed to be associated with previously recorded archaeological sites.
