Kammerer, Laura A., August, 1985 - AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE TARPON LAKE VILLAGES PROPERTY IN PINELLAS COUNTY, FLORIDA

Abstract: An intensive cultural resource assessment survey was conducted within Tarpon Lake Villages property in Pinellas County, Florida. This thesis discusses methods utilized, the resulting cultural resource information and their applications in archaeological site prediction during future surveys in the Central Peninsula Gulf Coast archaeological region. The cultural resource assessment survey of the property provided the data for developing and testing a prehistoric site location prediction model. This model was based on the relationships between prehistoric site locations and environmental factors. An estimate of the archaeological site densities aided in the identification of potential cultural resources and likely impact areas within the Tarpon Lake Villages property. The operational plan for the work consisted of Phase I survey and Phase II mitigative work. The survey phase utilized four steps involving both intensive, systematic and judgmental surface inspection and random and judgmental subsurface investigation of the survey property. Comparison of the results of the field work illustrated the relative effectiveness of subsurface investigations. The mitigative excavation phase illustrated the relative effectiveness of larger test units, allowing for greater depths which revealed previously unexposed cultural components. Archaic, Deptford, Weeden Island, Safety Harbor and historic culture period components were represented in the eight archaeological sites discovered during this survey. The data collected indicated a difference in site locations from the Archaic period to the post-Archaic cultures represented within the Tarpon Lake Villages property. The Archaic period sites were associated with different types of environmental factors than the later period Deptford, Weeden Island and Safety Harbor period sites. It is hypothesized that future site location models should consider chronological differences, as well as environmental factors, for site location predictions.
