LeVasseur, Andrea K., June 1981 - THE MANAGEMENT OF MARION COUNTY ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES: A GUIDE FOR NON-ARCHAEOLOGISTS Abstract: Destruction of archaeological sites, the irreplaceable source of information about extinct peoples and their ways of life, is a major problem in the United States. Most destruction results from development projects, and it is most efficient to protect archaeological sites by anticipating their existence on a property prior to, as well as during project planning stages. In order to predict where presently unknown archaeological sites occur in Marion County, a site location predictive model was devised for use by non-archaeologists. Information was derived from the location of known sites, was statistically manipulated with the aid of a computer, and indicates areas where archaeological sites probably will be located. When integrated into the total management plan, the model aids developers and planners in distinguishing those areas which need to be archaeologically surveyed prior to development. In an attempt to verify model predictions, three areas of low site probability and one area of high site probability were visited to test for the existence of sites. The results suggest that the site location predictive model is accurate. The management process (of which the model is a part) is a step-by-step guide intended for use by the Withlacoochee Regional Planning Council and developers. It provides the Council with a degree of archaeological expertise in reviewing A-95 and DRI applications, and yields a recommendation for or against archaeological survey in specific areas. Developers are supplied a detailed discussion of their legislated responsibilities, as well as the process of contracting surveys and archaeological survey standards.
