McCourt, Bridget A. 2001 The Implementation of Everyday Mathematics: An Anthropological Investigation. Abstract: The purpose of this study is to document the implementation of Everyday Mathematics (EM), a standards-based curriculum, in four elementary schools involved in the Memphis Urban Systemic Initiative. Information about the implementation was gathered from qualitative methods such as classroom observations, teacher and principal interviews, and a school-wide survey. An analytic framework depicting external and internal factors is used in analysis. The findings suggest that teacher’s mixed opinions of the curriculum, lack of professional development experiences, difficulties in assessing their students using it, and their belief that students need drill and practice more than inquiry learning all affect how they implement EM in their classrooms.
