McMullen, Jean Alexandria Stewart - IDENTIFICATION OF THE NONCOMPLYING POPULATION OF PATIENTS DIAGNOSED TO HAVE CANCER

Abstract: The purpose of this study is the identification of black and white male populations treated for pulmonary cancer, esophageal cancer, and oat cell cancer of the lung, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Tampa, Florida. This study identifies 241 patients diagnosed and treated for the aforementioned cancers between January 1, 1976, and June 30, 1977. Epidemiological data has been collected on members of this population and reveals: The average age is in the mid-fifties; the majority is blue-collar workers with a grade- and high-school education; and a noncompliance rate of 17.84 percent is shown for the total population being studied. Interviews of representatives of the complying and noncomplying patient populations have been carried out. Comparison of the compiled interviews reveals the complying patients to have identifiable family and friend support systems. Furthermore, the complying patients express acceptance of their diagnosis and required treatment regimens. None of the noncomplying patients have family support systems and all are nonaccepting of their diagnosis and required treatments.
