Mohlman, Geoffrey. 1995. Bibliography of Resources Concerning the African American Presence in Tampa, 1513-1995. Abstract: The history of African Americans in Tampa from colonial times to the present was traced to reveal the important and su~stantial contributions Blacks have made to the city. During this 482-year span, demographically, African Americans consisted of explorers, maroons, slaves, freed people, male, female, rich and poor. Until now, nearly the entire five centuries of Black presence in Tampa has been ignored, or only tangentially skimmed over, resulting in the perpetuation of pejorative stereotypes, offering scant historical legitimacy, and consequently, allowing little claim to participation in contemporary events. Throughout the text, I attempt to illustrate the interconnectedness of Black Tampans' past with that of the city's. The thesis is divided into two parts: (l) the text and (2) the bibliography. To challenge the previously mentioned fallacies of local African American history, I have created a historical narrative of Tampa~s Black population, pointing out important resources of information for other researchers. The text constitutes a bibliographic history of the African American presence in Tampa. The second part of the thesis is a bibliography of resources related to Black Tampans. The data included in the bibliography ranges from photographs to oral history interviews, including both primary and secondary sources. My primary goal for the thesis is that it be utilized as a guide to the literature available concerning local African Americans, in hopes that more work can be done to close the gaps and correct the distortions in this unfinished chapter of Tampa's history and culture.
