Muir, Rebekah Ruth, December 1989 - COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORK AMONG THE CAPE VERDEANS OF THE BAIRRO SANTA FILOMENA, PORTUGAL: Analysis of an Applied Anthropology Internship Project that Failed

Abstract: This thesis bases itself in an internship on community development set in the Bairro Santa FiloRaimunda, a shantytown in the Lisbon suburb of Amadora, Portugal. The intern attempted to discover a crafts base for a bazaar. The analysis of the project results is based on anthropological literature, especially community development work as presented by Ward Goodenough (1963). According to this theorist, ideal projects join actors to meet a negotiated end. All involved must believe the end represents some part of their needs. To show how this internship project fell short of the ideal, the thesis first describes the community's ethnic groups by history and culture. It then presents the Casa da Alegria work by programs and origins. After these two chapters the final shape of the internship project appears in a natural light. The local community and work were complex enough to frustrate negotiations for a bazaar. Also the crafts base was too shallow to produce competitive items in the small market in the bairro itself or Portugal. In conclusion, the thesis shows that the internship was applicable not only as a lesson, but also because it helped uncover the more important needs of the community and host organization in Santa Filomena. Recommendations are made to community development workers for future directions.
