Newman, Christine Lee, December 1985 - ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT THE MARITA SITE A TRANSITIONAL THROUGH HISTORIC PERIOD SITE Abstract: This thesis documents the results of the archaeological data recovery program at the Marita site (8-Hi-558) in northern Hillsborough County, Florida. The excavations were undertaken as a portion of the University of South Florida 1983 summer field school. Funding was provided by the Deltona Corporation, which will commercially develop the area. The primary objective of the project was to continue and expand upon the areas of investigation initiated or suggested by Rom in 1979. At the Marita site this included: 1) the investigation into any association between areas of higher phosphate concentration and site activities; 2) to determine if horticulture, or plant manipulation, was carried out at, or near, the site; 3) to determine if the inhabitants of the site were involved in inter-regional trade networks; and 4) to determine if thermally altered lithic material was used more intensely than was unaltered stone. The Marita site is believed to represent a multiple activity site with no dominant activity subset. The evidence indicates use of this locus as early as the Orange or Florida Transitional phase (4000 to 2500 B.P.) and continued through the Historic period, with the major occupation of the site occurring during the Weeden Island-related phase (2500 to 7500 B.P.). This site probably served as an intermittently occupied extractive camp.
