Owens, Walter L., April 1990 - DATABASE MANAGEMENT IN A SUBSTANCE ABUSE INTERVENTION SETTING Abstract - A computerized client records system was established for Alcohol Community Treatment Services, Inc. (ACTS), a non-profit substance abuse intervention agency in Tampa, FL. The system utilizes IBM-compatible microcomputers and dBASE III Plus database software. This has allowed the agency to automate its reports, both internal as well as those required by various funding sources. Beyond report-generation, the database system has enabled the agency: 1) to compete more effectively for state and federal grants, 2) to enhance program evaluation, 3) to conduct analyses, such as changes in drug abuse patterns, and 4) to improve interagency planning of local human services needs. ACTS was largely reliant on Florida's Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services for funds before the database system was established. The database system has assisted ACTS in acquiring additional sources of revenues, thus making the agency less dependent upon a single source of funds.
