Parker, Brian Thomas, April 1994 - ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE THANK YOU MA'AM CREEK SITE, NORTHWEST FLORIDA

Abstract: The primary goal of this thesis research is the documentation and initial interpretation of the results of surface and subsurface archaeological test investigations conducted in 1986 and 1993 at the Thank You Ma'am Creek site (8FR755) in the lower Apalachicola River Basin of northwest Florida. Preliminary analysis of the cultural data from this site indicates that there have been two distinct periods of occupation: the first, an incipient Late Archaic settlement during which the bulk of the shell midden was deposited and the second, a much later Fort Walton period re-occupation. In addition to the determination of the cultural association and temporal placement of 8FR755 and its relationship to other sites in the Apalachicola delta region recently investigated by the University of South Florida, reasons for the abandonment of the Thank You Ma'am Creek site for the 1000 or more years intervening these prehistoric periods are discussed, with the conclusion that this occupational hiatus can be most likely be attributed to the interaction of dynamic geomorphological and ecological processes which have reshaped the former Late Archaic bay/estuarine site environment into a present-day freshwater delta swamp.
