Pope, James W., April 1985 - PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENT PATTERNS OF THE TIDAL ZONE OF THE ALAFIA RIVER DRAINAGE BASIN

Abstract: Individual prehistoric sites in the Tampa Bay area have been studied extensively but little has been done with settlement patterns and site interaction. Using the little data available, the archaeological classification of sites in the Alafia River drainage basin has been assessed using standard techniques of archaeological analysis. It has been hypothesized that a large multi-purpose central place site may have existed at the mouth of the Alafia River. The concept of catchment analysis has been explored as an alternative to the hinterland hypothesis. On this basis it has been hypothesized that the inhabitants of the river mouth site exploited the interior resources of the drainage basin, either on a seasonal basis or through exchange between permanently occupied sites.
