Sandbach, Kathleen Joan 1979 - THE ETHNOGRAPHY OF A NURSING HOME: Nursing homes fill a need for society by providing care for some people who are no longer able to provide care for themselves. Nursing home life requires adjustment by the patients to a new pattern of living. By utilizing the anthropological techniques of observing behavior, interviewing, and examining written records, the patients and staff of one nursing home were studied holistically in their social setting. The Ethnography of a Nursing Home shows that the stereotyped ideas American culture has about nursing home patients are not necessarily true and that each patient needs to be treated as an individual as his or her needs may vary.
