Smith, Michael, August 1987 - ASSESSING THE NEED FOR EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS AMONG PINELLAS COUNTY EMPLOYERS Abstract: A mail survey of Pinellas County employers was conducted for Mental Health Services of Upper Pinellas, Inc. in Clearwater, Florida. The purpose of the project was to collect data to be used by the agency in marketing employee assistance programs. Data was collected regarding the personnel related problems these employers have experienced, the types of personal or emotional problems experienced by their employees, and employer's familiarity with employee assistance programs. Questionnaires were mailed to the personnel directors of seventy-five Pinellas County businesses. Responses were received from twenty-four respondents. The most frequently reported personnel related problems were high absenteeism, excessive lateness, high turnover, and low worker productivity. The most frequently reported employee personal or emotional problems were financial problems, marital problems, divorce, child rearing problems, stress on the job, and alcoholism/problem drinking. The frequencies with which various problems were reported varied with the sex composition of the workforce and type of organization (i.e., manufacturer or nonmanufacturer). The majority of respondents reported that they were familiar with employee assistance programs. Recommendations made to the agency included: (l) offering consultation services, financial counseling services, and educational presentations addressing topics such as marital and family problems, stress management, and substance abuse; (2) collecting organization specific information for use in marketing contacts; and (3) hiring additional staff as needed and training staff regarding employee assistance program philosophy and procedures.
