Smith, Shelly. 2001 A Network Analysis of Collaboration through the University of South Florida’s Collaborative for Children, Families and Communities.

Abstract: This thesis describes a project that was done for the USF Collaborative for Children, Families, and Communities in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Masters Degree in Applied Anthropology. The main objective of this project was to develop a replicable model of collaboration through social network analysis that could be applied to the USF Collaborative, to other USF departments, and to other universities. The methodology of the project began with telephone interviews to USF faculty members involved in the USF Collaborative. The information obtained in these interviews was used to refine the data collection instrument into a checklist that would obtain more accurate data for analysis. The information obtained from the checklist was then used in various social network analysis programs to analyze the network properties of betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, and structural equivalence. The frequency of differenet kinds of collaboration USF faculty engaged in was also analyzed. This process was done for two networks: a USF faculty network and a USF faculty – Tampa Bay Area agency/organization network. The result of this project was the development of a model of collaboration that responded to the needs of the USF Collaborative.
