The effects of workplace support on the career paths of professional African-American women in the corporate employment sector, (Angrosino). 2003 This dissertation investigates the successes and continuing challenges experienced by African American professional women in the corporate employment sector. Utilizing the tools of in-depth interviewing techniques, this research makes African American professional women the focal point of study. The author examines the work life encounters and personal truths of thirteen African American professional women to originate innovative strategies to improve career success opportunities in private sector workplaces, to make information available that will empower other women who may be in need of career assistance and guidance, and to contribute to the tradition of African American women's intellectual work. The historical background pertinent to an understanding of the contemporary workplace experiences of African American women is discussed. Core themes related to developmental relations, specifically mentoring relationships, emerged among the most significant factors in the career success of the research study participants. The study participants' individual viewpoints shape the collective voices that are detailed in the study.
