Snapp, Annette L. April 1989 - LAND-USE GUIDELINES FOR THE PROTECTION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES Abstract : Because archaeological resources are non-renewable, interest has grown in their management in the wake of rapid development. The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has been involved in the development of land-use guidelines which seek to protect archaeological resources located on District-owned lands. This thesis is a result of those efforts. Known and suspected archaeological resources as well as the determination of the degree of destruction for each proposed activity guide the protective, preservative, and mitigative responses suggested in the land-use guidelines for each property examined. Presented are land-use guidelines, their implementation, and a site-predictive model to aid in the determination of suspected archaeological resources. The site-predictive model was developed and applied to a specific property. The resulting low, medium, and high probability areas were then tested through field work. The results are presented here and recommendations are made for the future refinement of the site predictive model. These land-use guidelines, as they are presented, are intended to be useful for any organization in the business of land management by design or default. The guidelines are presented in such a manner that any organization may tailor them to its archaeological resources and proposed activities. By offering practical guidelines, some of the archaeological resources we seek to protect may have a better chance of survival.
