Wijensinha, Shyanika (MA), Conduction evaluation in community health programs: Applying anthropology in the Prevention Marketing Initiative. (Whiteford), 2002.

This thesis is based on my internship conducted at the Battelle Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation with emphasis on case studies of the Prevention Marketing Initiative (PMI) local demonstration sites, a project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The demonstration project looked at the creation and evaluation of HIV prevention programs for youth under the age of 25 in five communities across the country. The aspect of the internship project that I chose for further study was the workshop evaluation component of the Prevention Marketing Initiative. Evaluation is a necessary and valuable tool in assessing the impact and efficacy of community-based public health program. However, community programs often face challenges in conducting evaluation, particularly when more rigorous designs and methods are used. This thesis examines the challenges faced by the demonstration sites in participating in evaluation and builds a framework based on an anthropological approach to evaluation that may help to overcome some of the challenges encountered.
